Title Radiator Double skin panel
Description Wednesday June 2, 2004
I start on the ULTIMA at noon (arrived back from Vancouver at midnight) and start on the radiator double skin panel. This is going to be my test panel for insulating the car and I carefully unwrap the aluminum faced reinforced 24 foot long insulation roll that I ordered from J.C.Whitney and stored around December 2003. I quickly discover that two layers back to back - foil facing outwards - is exactly 19mm thick, which will work well for insulating both the radiator panel and the full double skin cockpit floor.

I also realize that the radiator double skin panel is unsupported at one edge and requires the use of two of the 0.75" X 0.75" square tube sections that I thought were for the sole use of the construction of the double skin cockpit floor and since I had already marked them for that purpose, a visit to my "Metal Supermarket" is indicated. This is not mentioned anywhere in the Ultima manual - both old and new so new builders please take note.

Thankfully they stock several hundred feet of the exact same material, so to secure a four foot length is no problem. I return home and cut the square tube sections to length and finish the ends nicely on the bench sander.

I proceed with the construction of the four triangular insulation sandwiches - they are made from two layers of the J.C. Whitney insulation material and sealed with waterproof aluminum tape at each edge. This will prevent any moisture from migrating into the insulation. I test fit them together with the radiator double skin panel and call it a day since it is already 10:00PM.

Title Square tube finishing
Description The bench sander makes for a nice finish on the ends of the square tubes for the double skin floor and radiator double skin panels - not that these will be visible, but I will have the satisfaction of knowing that they were made as if they are.
