Preparing for the build - Loading the ULTIMA into a truck
Description
Preparing for the Build
The ULTIMA arrived in mid November 2003 amidst snow and cold and it was promptly stored in the space previously occupied by the Porsche. Fortunately the Porsche was picked up by the new owner within days of the ULTIMA's arrival, otherwise I would have had to store the Porsche elsewhere.
My initial intention was to start work on the ULTIMA as soon as I could get some heat into the garage and decided that the best time for starting the build would be some time after Christmas.
After Christmas, I ended up buying a heavy duty construction site propane heater with an output of 100,000BTUs and started inventorying the ULTIMA parts to see if everything was in the boxes. The heater made quick work of bringing the 500 square foot garage up to a reasonable working temperature but the garage door needed to be opened every half hour or thereabouts to dissipate the fumes, which were really unpleasant. After a couple more sessions with the heater it was time to return it and find an alternative source of heat.
Easier said than done - after calling more than a half dozen recommended heating contractors only two responded by telling me that they were way too busy with larger projects and that the earliest date that they could install a garage heater or furnace would be around mid March. At which point I said "thanks, but no thanks" since it would be warming up in April and it would really be foolhardy to install an expensive heating system for a months worth of use.
The schedule for starting the ULTIMA build was now revised to commence in April/May 2004 or sooner if the weather cooperates.
In the interim I started adding more air tools that I thought would be helpful for the build. I kept my eyes open for sales on an air riveter, metal shears, nibbler and high speed saw and bought each item as it went on sale, thereby saving as much as 40% of the list price.
