Title The front taken off
Description Friday April 9, 2004
We (my son and I) started the ULTIMA build today (Good Friday) and commenced by unbolting the factory pre-fitted front and rear sections off the chassis. I took some close-up photographs of each connector before we unbolted anything, in the event that we had to match fit these body panels onto the chassi at a later time. I also used a little silver spray paint to mark the exact place the washer and bolt assembly occupied on the chassis prior to unbolting the pieces from the Heim joints (Rose joints in British parlance). The plan was to unbolt these pieces and to store them in the basement or a spare upstairs bedroom while we worked on the rest of the car at our leisure. Both these planned storage spaces however, proved inaccessible, because of the width of these panels - they are just too big to negotiate normal sized corridors or stairs. A task that was only going to take an hour or so now turned into a daylong job. After much head scratching and consultation with my wife, we decided to bring these panels into the house through the back patio doors off the deck and into the living room, which in my opinion is underutilized and rarely used except when we have guests over. We cleared a corner of the living room, moved the largish Magnepan speakers off to the side and parked the front and rear body panels in the living room much to my wife's chagrin. I am thankful that the living room is two storeys high and even with big shiny yellow body panels occupying a fair chunk of space, they do not look too much out of place, in fact they look like pieces of an interesting big yellow sculpture now.
